Denmark’s gambling industry experienced a notable rise in total spending during August 2024, with gross gaming revenue (GGR) hitting DKK 571 million ($84.1 million). This represents a 4.3% increase compared to August 2023, primarily driven by a significant surge in online casino activity. However, while online casino revenue flourished, other sectors like sports betting, gaming machines, and land-based casinos saw declines.

The online casino segment was the star performer, contributing DKK 299 million to the overall GGR in August—a remarkable 20.8% increase from the same month last year. This growth also marked a 5.3% rise compared to July 2024. Despite coming close, the August figures fell just shy of the all-time monthly revenue record for online casinos in Denmark, which was set at DKK 309 million in March of this year.

This trend demonstrates a clear shift in consumer behavior, with more Danish gamblers opting for the convenience and variety of online platforms over traditional gambling formats. Online slots, rouletteblackjack, poker, and bingo games continue to be popular choices for players, drawing significant traffic and revenue to online casino operators.

Declines in Other Gambling Sectors

While online casinos enjoyed a successful month, other areas of Denmark’s gambling market did not fare as well. The sports betting sector saw a substantial year-on-year drop of 14%, bringing in DKK 147 million in revenue, which was also slightly lower than July’s numbers.

Meanwhile, the land-based segment continues to face challenges. Revenues from physical slot machines slightly decreased by 0.2% to DKK 96 million. Although this is still an improvement over previous months, the long-term outlook remains uncertain. In addition, revenue from land-based casinos dropped by 12%, with earnings of DKK 29 million, matching the total from July.

August also brought about structural changes in how the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, reports its data. Poker now appears as a separate category under online casino statistics, providing more granular insights into the sector’s performance. This change, which has been applied retroactively to data dating back to 2012, allows for a clearer understanding of how different game types are performing in the market.

With this update, online casino revenues are now categorized into six distinct game types: slot machines, roulette, blackjack, poker, bingo, and other. The move to separate poker from other online gaming formats is seen as a way to offer greater transparency and help stakeholders better assess market trends.
